5 Stress-Busting Tips for Busy Parents

22nd January 2021 1 Comment

Being a parent can be the hardest job in the world, so it’s not surprising mums and dads experience more than their fair share of stress. When you’re raising kids full-time, working outside the home and/or managing a home, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, these stress-busting tips will help you to inject a little relaxation into your life and leave you feeling calm and centred:

1. Start the Day Calmly

If your kids are early risers, try setting your alarm for 30 minutes before they usually wake up and use the extra time to embrace the day calmly. Alternatively, if you’re usually the first one up in your home, don’t spend the time cleaning up or doing chores. Instead, spend a few minutes being mindful or meditating. A calm start to the day can set you up for everything that happens later, so it’s well worth making it part of your daily routine.

2. Talk About Stress

Many parents tried to hide symptoms of stress from their children, only for kids to pick up on their mood anyway. By talking about stress and modelling stress-relieving techniques, however, you can teach your kids an important life lesson. Additionally, you’ll be free to incorporate stress reduction into your day-to-day life, without waiting until your kids are at school or in bed.

3. Treat Yourself

As a parent, you probably spend a good deal of time providing positive reinforcement to everyone else but it’s important to recognise your own achievements too. Reward yourself for a job well done or treat yourself when you’ve got through a task you were dreading. Whether it’s a long, hot shower, a new book, a pack of CBD gummies or a night out, make sure you treat yourself often. A little luxury can go a long way to making your feel less stressed, so don’t forget to do something special as often as you can.

4. Spend Time with Friends

If playdates are the main social activity on your calendar, it’s time to schedule some time with friends. If getting a babysitter or meeting up in person isn’t possible, arrange a virtual group chat instead. Being sociable can be a great stress-reliever, so try to make this a regular thing.

5. Lighten the Load

Take a look at your schedule and see whether it’s really achievable or sustainable. If not, identify the things you can knock off your ‘to-do’ list. Do you really need to vacuum every day? Would ride-sharing make the school run easier? Can you order groceries online instead of going shopping? Making relatively small changes to your routine can save you a whole lot of time and hassle. In turn, this reduces stress and makes your daily routine much more manageable.

Being stressed is sometimes part of being a parent, but it shouldn’t, and doesn’t have to be, constant. By trying some of the tips above, you can learn how to relax a little more and feel a bit more peaceful no matter how chaotic your day-to-day life may be.
