5 Reasons Why I Love Going On Holiday As A Family

20th January 2020

It’s January. It’s dark. It’s cold and chances are while you are reading this, it’s raining. It’s no wonder that we often book us a getaway in January. After all the excitement December brings, January always feels a little flat so the thought of a break away is something that really picks me up in January.

I am so lucky that we already have a break to London booked in February, a family getaway to Dorset in April then my huge surprise trip to New York in December. We are looking at getting annual passes this year so we can have lots of holidays here in the UK as I don’t think a big abroad getaway is on the cards this year due to a house move. Here are 5 reasons why I love going away as a family:

1. A change of scenery does WONDERS for the soul

I think I would be happy staying in a hotel 10 minutes down the road, purely because it enables you to leave your day to day grind behind. You don’t have to worry about the washing up, hoovering or the mundane chores that surround you at home. A little stay-cation really does recharge the batteries and gives us all something to look forward to. My kids are usually happy if they have somewhere where they can run around, for me anywhere near the sea is a huge win win so we often head to the coast but recently I am loving cities such as Bath where we went twice last year. It’s great to just have a wander with no plans and get out there.

2. You against the world

On holiday you are brought together. With a husband who works away during the week, having him with us 24/7 is definitely a novelty and as his phone is turned off, it really is the family together. I’m not going to lie and pretend it’s all rainbows and unicorns as it can be intense, but with so much going on in everyone’s lives it’s nice to down tools and just BE together. It is a good chance to reconnect as a family which research has shown takes at least two days to kick in. I will make it my mission to make that shorter when we go away!

3. Making Memories

Most of my all time favourite memories are made on holidays. As a kid, our two weeks holiday in August created most of my long term happy memories and I know that when I ask my kids, theirs too are often when we have been away; with Disney World in Florida always heavily featuring! I absolutely love having the luxury of being able to treat my children and let them visit so many wonderful places and go on holiday as much as they do. It is a real passion of mine and one they all have definitely inherited.

4. Discovering the world

I absolutely love to travel and now that the kids are that bit older, we can go on more adventures and discover more of the world and head to more obscure destinations off the beaten track as they too have a thirst for exploring. Charlie is desperate to go to the Ukraine and Japan and the girls keen to visit Hong Kong after my sister went last year. I know that maybe next year we will stray from the usual touristy spots and explore the world together.

5. Chill

Now the girls are a little bit older and are more self sufficient it means that holidays allow us to have some chill time! Last year I managed to read THREE books during our 11 nights away and it was pure bliss.

This post is making me want to go away NOW! Do you have any plans for holidays or trips this year?

B xx

I love you going on holiday so I can see all your pictures haha No really I do agree though – that intense bit of family time to reconnect is priceless whether it’s a big holiday or a little local break.

I love going on holiday too – and as silly as it sounds, things that would normally stress me out, don’t. I’m so much more chill and a much happier parent! H x

I agree so much, we have booked 6 little mini breaks for this year as we enjoyed the ones we had last year – we looked forward to it and the rest and change was so good for us all. Early morning walks to the beach, sea air in any weather – you can’t beat it

We have a summer holiday booked to Greece already this year. I feel exactly the same as you. Just being together and reconnecting is so important!
