Transitioning From Kid to Teen

20th January 2020

2020 is a big year for Charlie with him making the leap from primary to secondary school. We recently measured him and he is a huge 5ft5 at just 11, so there’s really very little evidence of him being a young boy anymore. Charlie has always been lucky that being the only boy and having twin siblings, he’s always had his own bedroom but with a house move on the cards, thoughts have already turned to the kids all having their own individual bedrooms.

Charlie has a pretty neutral grey bedroom but his IKEA cabin bed had to be chopped to fit over the stair box in his room to maximise his space, so when we move he will be in desperate need of a new bed as his cannot be moved out of the room as it was cut to fit that room, and that room alone! The girls too have bunk beds which cannot be separated meaning we will have to fork out for at least two new beds when we move. I wish we had looked into getting custom size beds from Bed Guru for the kids so that when we move we can easily move the beds without having to shell out.

I will definitely want to go for a more neutral colour for the girls, who ended up with pink walls purely because we had pink paint left over from their nursery! I think when we moved in, we did everything on a budget instead of looking at the long term picture which is definitely what I will do in the future, to keep a more contemporary modern fresh feeling.

I have found we have so much mismatched furniture and styles in all our rooms, so I would love to have more matching items in a room so it flows nicely instead of looking so hodge podged. I like the idea of having a bedroom which will grow with the kids so as the girls get older, there won’t be a need to shed all the younger stuff and replace it again. They had all Paw Patrol bedding and toys and I am so glad we didn’t go for the matching curtains as things like that, they grow out of so quickly.

Space and price permitting, I may actually look at investing in a double bed so that they have more room and it will see them through for many years to come. As I mentioned, Charlie is going to be super tall so he’s definitely going to be needing the space. With an inevitable mountain of homework incoming, he will also need his own working desk space so he can knuckle down and get it all sorted instead of heading for the kitchen table.

I am so exciting about finding our forever home, and even more excited to get started on all the interiors!
