If you are lucky then you have never had to call out an emergency locksmith but there are many instances when you might – if you find yourself locked out of your house and urgently need to get back in for example. This is the most common reason that 24-hour locksmiths get called out but there are other instances when you are best to get on Checkatrade and find someone nearby to come out for emergency service. Here are 5 examples of when you may need to contact a locksmith.
You lock yourself out
The reason that most of us call a locksmith is that we find ourselves locked out and unable to get into our home or business. You might feel a little silly if you have locked your keys inside or have absentmindedly left them somewhere, but we guarantee that a locksmith has heard it all and will not think twice about whatever situation you find yourself in.
If your lock or key is damaged
Sometimes locks get dirty or clogged up with gunk over time and it makes them stiff/difficult to lock meaning that you end up wrestling to get your door unlocked every day. The more you wrestle with the lock the more chance that you are going to end up breaking off the key and then you will be stuck outside and have a broken key. This is when you will need to call a locksmith because they have the tools to get the broken piece out of the lock without causing any damage. Your locking system should be able to withstand the usual wear and tear of repeated use, but it can still get dirty and damaged in other ways which affect how well it works. It is best to call a locksmith before it gets to this point and as soon as you notice it getting stiff so they can come and give it a thorough cleaning or replace it if necessary.
After a break-in
If you have recently suffered a break-in then you may have found that their attempts to get in have caused damage to your door or lock, damage that you will need to get sorted out as soon as possible. You will want to make sure that your home is secured and protected against any further break-ins so get a locksmith to come out and repair the damage immediately. They can also change the locks entirely if you want to feel extra safe.
To help with your electronic locking system
Locksmiths help with electronic locks as well as manual ones – they can help if you have forgotten your combination, if there is a power outage or if you have other short-term troubles with your locking system. There is no immediate way to fix an electronic lock, but your locksmith is the best bet for when you need to gain access quickly as electronic locks are often fitted with a keyhole to enable them to gain access for you this way.
