The question has been popped, a day has been set and you are planning the best wedding possible. You’ll have many things to contend with during the planning process; one of which is choosing a wedding photographer. How do you find someone to capture the special moments on your big day?
Choosing your photographer begins by deciding the type of photography you want at your wedding. That’s right, there are multiple types to choose from! We’ll run through the three most popular types to help you figure out which one is right for you. From here, you can find a wedding photographer that caters to your needs.

Traditional wedding photography
This is the classic way of taking photos at a wedding. Here, the photographer will take a lot of posed shots of the couple and everyone at the event. They direct you and tell you where to stand, how to pose, where to look, etc.
The plus side of these photos is that they look so immaculately and artistic. They will almost look like works of art. The downside is that they perhaps don’t capture the natural emotions of a wedding day – and it takes some time to organise all the different photos.

Documentary wedding photography
Also known as reportage, this type of photography aims to tell the story of your big day. The photographer will roam around the setting and take photos of things they see. You can find good examples of this type of photography by looking for a documentary wedding photographer website to visit.
The benefit of reportage photos is that they convey all the natural emotions of your wedding. You also get to see people’s reactions to certain things that you may miss on the day itself. It’s the most natural and relaxed type of photography out there.

Modern wedding photography
There is also a contemporary approach to wedding photography that almost mimics shots found in fashion magazines. Here, the photos are staged – yet slightly more relaxed. It’s more about the scene and the image itself, rather than the people in the photo.
The upside is that you get some very trendy and artistic photos that could easily be in magazines. The downside is that it all feels a bit forced and might detract from the magic of your wedding day.
What is the best option?
It comes down to personal preference, though reportage/documentary photography is highly popular. This feels like the best way to capture everything that happens on the big day, ensuring you remember it forever.
At the same time, it’s good to maybe pair this with some more posed and staged shots. A good combination is traditional photography with documentary photography. For the most part, modern wedding photos aren’t really that amazing. They can be brilliant if you want some unique, fashionable snaps.
However, for most people, they’re not a popular choice. Once you have chosen the type of photos you want, you need to look for a photographer that can provide them for you on your big day.
