Willpower is the drive to reach for our goals, and it happens to be one of the core elements of self-discipline. It involves problem-solving, persistence, delay of gratification, and self-regulation. For children, stimulating their natural drive at an early stage is key. Here are 6 ways to do so using positive parenting techniques.

Explore various genres of books

Encourage them to choose their books

Reading is all about fun. If your kids do not enjoy what they read, they will lose the motivation to read. They will also enjoy exercising their independence by getting to choose their own books, which will make them more driven to focus when they read.

Help them discover different interests in books

Children might not be able to determine right away what they are interested in. As parents, it is necessary to expose them to different types of books and encourage their critical thinking. The key is to slowly build up their reading comprehension skills, so that they can read more books

Surround them with reading

Creating an effective reading environment is a great way to encourage your child to read. For example, you can make a small library area in their bedroom. Having storybooks and board books for children at home will encourage them to develop their creativity, learn new themes, words, colours and more.

Encourage your children to decide

Let them share their opinion

Children are naturally curious. They are also eager to share what they see and experience every day. When they share their opinions with you, it means that they want to communicate with you or send you a message of what they like and want to do. That’s a good sign, and it’s an excellent way to understand your kids’ personality.

Let them select their extracurricular activities

Kids know better than parents about what they are interested in. Children will become “passive” if they get used to accepting and taking what their parents choose for them.

Use positive reinforcement on your children

Use the appropriate language and actions to motivate your kids.

It’s scientifically proven that your children will usually do the opposite of what they are told, if they are being blamed all the time Your children will soon believe all the negative comments you tell them, lowering their self-esteem.

Positive comments are the drives for kids to learn. Their desire determines whether they want to do something. Motivation usually generates positive thoughts and vice versa.

So, the right ways should be:• Be loving and responsive.• Inspire them to find an interest.• Encourage them to do what they are interested in.• Take discipline as an opportunity to educate.• Educate them with a practical suggestion when they make a mistake.

Develop routines and structures

Discipline is about habits towards specific goals.

A routine is a schedule. A structure is how you organise your work predictably. When your children have a routine and structure, it means they have a schedule with plans to follow.Little by little, they will create their own forms. And that’s how children can shape a habit.

For example, parents may set a daily reading routine to develop a life-long reading habit.

Show an interest in all aspects of your children’s lives. In general, when kids come to talk to you or show you some emotions, the purpose is to have your attention.

Children need positive attention and interaction to show that they are valued. Children feel supported when they have responsive interactions with parents and people around them. A positive and loving environment helps children build confidence.

The way you interact with your children will influence how they see the world, including their attitudes towards education and career. It’s necessary to let them feel your positive attention.

You don’t have to be an expert to get involved in their interests. All you need to do is show an interest in your child’s interests or activities, ask them questions, and interact with them, encourage them to keep doing what they love.

Be a role model for your children

“Actions speak louder than words” It works in all situations.

The parent is the first teacher to their children. Your children are inspired by you. They learn from you how you do, talk, act, think, and attitude towards them. In other words, if you want to make them do as you wish, the best way is to influence them with actions. Being a role model works better than any words.

Here are some tips you can do:

• Be loving, open-minded, and respectful.

• Set your routine for work and playing time with them.

• Learn a new skill regularly.

Willingness comes from happiness. Our children feel more motivated to learn when they feel happy about doing so. Some also use learning games to help kids to grow. Also, patience is essential in the process of long-term children education. When you respect children, they will learn from you. With the right ways, you will yield twice the result with half the effort.
