The Thing About Cats

22nd January 2020

I took a rather long break from Instagram so you may not know that I actually now have three cats. I wrote about us adopting Louie in September 2018, but since then we have managed to grow our cat family by another two.

Shelby is a female blue point ragdoll who we adopted in March 2019. Her owners had downsized and their new house was next to a main road. She is quite the Houdini so they were worried about her getting out, so luckily for us we had the chance to adopt her. Shelby is the most child friendly cat you could ever imagine. She lets the girls play with her, pick her up and generally shower her with love and affection/ She is such a lovely natured girl who is often found flopped on her back with her belly out waiting for a tickle. Ragdoll cats are a large breed so at nearly 5kg, Shelby is a good weight for her breed (the average female is between 4-6kg) but it’s often fun if you get an uneducated vet who tells you that she is too heavy! She is our explorer and does venture into the back garden but not for long and is always back for her grub.

We got Betsy from a kitten at 13 weeks back in September 2019 and she is definitely the last addition to the family. I can’t quite imagine having more than 3 cats as the fur with one long haired cat is crazy but throw two raggies into the mix during moulting season, then the hoover is permanently out! Betsy is a seal point mitted ragdoll born May 2019. It has been absolutely fascinating to see how much her colouring has changed so much since we adopted her. Ragdolls often start with a small smattering of colour on their nose, but this will spread leaving them with a fully grey or black face. I already can’t believe how much she’s changed in the space of a few months. Betsy is a real greedy guts and I was hoping after having her spayed in December this may subside – it really hasn’t! She is a house cat, so we are adhering to her playful side to ensure she gets enough exercise and doesn’t sleep all day, which I think she happily would.

Shelby is definitely the boss lady of our cat family and there is still some friction between her and Betsy. Shelby seems to now want to play more, but her sheer size is daunting to baby Betsy so can result in some squealing. Louie is definitely the rose between his two lady thorns. They both adore him, and both love to play with him (when he arises from his slumber. This cat likes to sleep A LOT!) He is definitely the quietest and grazes on menial amounts of food, meaning despite being the eldest he is by far the dinkiest. Birmans as a breed aren’t as large as ragdolls but Louie for a male cat is exceptional petite.

I absolutely love having the cats, more than I ever realised. We love visiting the cat cafe in Shrewsbury and also have adopted a cat from Shropshire Cat Rescue so definitely have a bonafide crazy cat reputation, but I love it and embrace it – as you’ll know if you follow me on my personal Instagram account!
