How To Surprise Yourself In Life

13th April 2021

Life shouldn’t be all about knowing exactly what is coming next and planning for every eventuality. Sometimes it’s good to let life surprise you from time to time. This can be hard to achieve or allow to happen if you like to remain in control, but it is also necessary. Surprises are great for spontaneity, excitement, happiness, and they bring about some wonderful memories too.

If you don’t want to wait for someone else to surprise you, or you do like that extra bit of control that surprises tend to take away, why not start surprising yourself? Although it might sound impossible, the reality is that there are numerous ways you can surprise yourself. Read on to find out what some of them are.

Join A Subscription Box List

In the purest terms of surprising yourself, you can join a subscription box list and be surprised every month. Most subscription boxes require you to sign up, pay a monthly fee, and then you’ll be sent a package full of surprises through the post. There will be a theme involved depending on the subscription service you chose – examples including gin boxes, jewellery boxes, socks, books, perfume, chocolate, crystals, and many, many more – but the contents of the box will be a complete surprise.

The beauty of this idea is that you will always have something to look forward to, and even though you organised it yourself, you won’t know what the surprise actually is. The anticipation will be real.

Write Yourself Notes

Writing notes is something you might already do to remind yourself of the different tasks you need to do from day to day, but you can use them for other reasons too. Spend a little time writing notes that contain positive affirmations like ‘keep going’, ‘be positive’, ‘you are loved’, and ‘you’ve got this’, for example. Hide these notes in various places around the house (such as in the pocket of a winter coat or in the bottom of a little-used drawer), and over time you’ll forget where they are.

As you come across each one, you’ll be reminded of the good things in life, and the surprise will be a lovely, positive one.

Start A New Hobby

Hobbies are always positive things, as they will get you to try new ideas and step away from your work and the responsibilities you have at home. If you’re looking for a way to surprise yourself, maybe it’s time for a new hobby, and maybe it should be one that you wouldn’t have thought of before because, after all, you might surprise yourself and really enjoy it. Hobbies come in many forms, such as sport, creativity, collecting art on a budget, eating different food, and so much more.

When you’re looking at ways to surprise yourself, pick the hobby that is least like anything else you do or have thought about doing. Whether you enjoy the new activity or not, at least you will have tried, and in this way, you will have surprised yourself with your bravery and your spontaneity.
