Bye Bye Page 3 … Hello Pages of Selfies

On the same day that page 3 is rumoured that its going to be shelved, Kim Kardashian reveals she is selling a book filled with selfies of herself. How wonderful. NOT.
I have two young daughters and whilst girls posing with their breasts out in a “family newspaper” is now finally being deemed unacceptable, the fact that we are closing one door but opening another equally sad one kinda bothers me. It bothers me that a book filled with self obsessed photographs of an A List celebrity are going to be hitting the shelves. That this lady has become such a phenomenon from… A sex tape. Then progressed to a reality star who sold her wedding then “broke the Internet” with her well oiled rather voluptuous rear end. Now this.

Now quick opportunity to say – although it may seem it – I have nothing against Kim K. I don’t follow her career and don’t particular know the ins and outs so all your super fans and trolls – bear that in mind!

Anyhoo. I cannot grasp the fact that a book filled with “selfies” is even a thing! Surely there’s only a few ways you can pose? We buy newspapers and magazines often because of the visual aspect. No one wants wall to wall text and yes I like to indulge in them to see what clothes people are wearing but a book of full of narcissism?

Are we really that lost nowadays for substance? Does a book filled with your iphone camera roll really give something back to the fans? Is this what celebrities now are expected to do? Before they would pen an autobiography; give the reader something to take from a book but instead we are greeted with not even professional photography…or are we?

I’m sure for every photo in the book there was 20+ (probably times that by 50 for Kim) deleted for being dodgy. And I highly doubt she took them in her downstairs loo as that’s the only tidy room on her old iPhone 4…

I don’t want my girls to feel they need to stick on a face full of make up and sit for hours posing and perfecting their pout. Why have we so quickly become obsessed with portraying an inaccurate picture of ourselves? Instagram airbrushes all imperfections and takes 5 years off you (if you’re lucky) and that’s the tip of the editing iceberg!

So we are saying bye bye to boobs on page 3 of The Sun yet in sweeps yet another form of judging women by their beauty. They may not be baring their naked boobs and certainly aren’t showing their naked faces – but essentially they are still being judged. Kim Kardashian with her perfect beautiful flawless selfies is setting the bar. You need to look this effortlessly beautiful in your camera pictures because look how well Kim has done – Queen of the Selfies equals a luxury lifestyle?

So whilst the removal of topless models is perceived as a positive for women – are we simultaneously shooting ourselves in the foot by accepting that posing for photos for an ego boost and to show everyone how amazing you are is the way forward? (I felt like Carrie Bradshaw writing that!!)

Sigh. I don’t know. I don’t know where I’m even going with it! But please. Let’s try to knock this self obsessed ideology of beauty to gain comments via your mobile phone camera on its head – you just look a smidge vain posting 50+ shots of yourself a day!!!

    *insert round of applause*

Hopefully as parents we can steer our children in the right direction, although I know there are lots of other external factors that will effect them. All we can do is try and give them the foundation to have enough self belief to realise they don’t need to be ‘airbrush perfect’ in real life.

The fact you recognise this as an issue as opposed to something to be excited about is a pretty good sign that your kids are gonna be ok 🙂 xx

Well said Beth. I just don’t see the appeal of this kind of book. If she was doing a book of selfies that were funny and mocked the narcissism of celebrity culture then that might be more interesting.

A really interesting read. Thanks for writing such a thoughtful post. I am so happy that page 3 is no more. I don’t want my daughter to think it is okay for people to gawp at boobs and for breasts to be so sexualised by the media. I can’t believe that Kim K is producing a book of purely selfies. How self-centred! Hugs Mrs H xxxxx

Woo hoo! Bet you feel better after getting that off your chest (no irony intended)!

This is a great post and I couldn’t agree more. I think it’s really concerning that a year or so ago a poll showed that more teenage girls aspired to be glamour models and WAGs (how on earth is that even a career choice?!) than doctors and lawyers. It makes me sad and I do believe it comes from our society valuing celebrity so much that we no longer care why someone is famous.

I’m glad it appears Page 3 is no more – I’m all for freedom of choice and if you want to get your boobs out and titillate men from behind a camera then go for it. But no, I don’t want my child to have to look at it in the newspaper section of the supermarket.

I would like to give Kim & co and shake. Argh! Our great grandmothers did not burn their bras (again ironic) in the quest for equality so that 100 years later women themselves could be endorsing our gender as vacuous, pouting Barbie dolls. How you can ever expect the world to take you seriously after you balance a champagne bottle on your bum is beyond me. And yet she has a book deal to publish what is essentially a phone dump.

    Exasperated sigh x

Totally agree with you, I just can’t get my head around why someone would even want a book of her selfies when they’re all over Instagram anyway!

  6. 21st January 2015 / 8:18 pm

Hahaha Whilst I love the Kardashians I didn’t know Kim was doing a selfie book. That’s ridiculous. Can’t we all just look on instagram for that for free. Made me chuckle. I am so glad page three is gone. There would have never been one of those in the states. I was mortified when I first moved here and opened a paper up. You just can’t do that back home. Great post. Yes I agree what happened to looking natural and yourself without contouring and copious amounts of make up. I teach teens and they are obsessed with looking perfect in selfies x

I know! Utterly self obsessed but not shocked in the slightest!

  9. 22nd January 2015 / 1:54 pm

Celebrity obsession. Though she is not celebrity per se. I dont understand it as well. I know shes got freedom to show her body but in every opportunity that she gets?

Also I think the page 3 girls are back.

The world is getting weirder and weirder by the day sadly =(

  10. 22nd January 2015 / 9:23 pm

Just what????? How can that even be a thing?
I am so glad page 3 is hopefully at it’s end. I don’t have a daughter but wouldn’t want mine to grow up seeing that as normality, as I don’t want my son to either.
A book full of selfies is just ridiculous vanity and narcissism. I feel a complete plonker taking a selfie on the occasion that I do, can’t imagine having enough of them to fill a book! #brilliantblogposts

Ah, and there I was planning to start posting selfies on IG every hour…! It’s odd that some people even do this. To be honest, and I don’t mean to be controversial here, it doesn’t trouble me. For every random woman like this, there is a great role model, and I’ll just have to trust in my daughter that she’ll spot the good from the foolish! Thanks for sharing with #WotW x

I look forward to these endless selfies :pppp

  12. 23rd January 2015 / 3:39 pm

So pleased finally p3 has gone. I don’t mind selfies myself although 50 a day is ridiculous but a book on Kim K is silly, it’s there for free anyway! Thanks for linking up to #brilliantblogposts

      Thanks for having me x

  13. 23rd January 2015 / 3:56 pm

Well said! I have a one year old daughter, and I intend to teach her more about true beauty and less about the culture that’s now captured the masses outside my door. My hope is that someday, she knows that worthy notoriety doesn’t come from the four inch screen and front facing camera everyone possesses.

  14. 23rd January 2015 / 4:17 pm

Fab post and I couldn’t agree more, I hate selfies anyway (maybe because I’ve never taken a good one). Life has become more and more superficial and I want my kids growing up knowing that they are beautiful on the inside as well as the outside!

Oh, only point I don’t agree with in your post….Kim K, A list?! Really? For getting her bum out…..Z list at best!

  15. 23rd January 2015 / 8:45 pm

Great post hon. I can’t imagine why anybody in their right mind would wanna do a book of selfies let alone buy one, it’s total madness.Xx

    • 23rd January 2015 / 8:56 pm

Certainly is! Its sad that its even more exploiting “fans” wuth utter tripe!

  16. 23rd January 2015 / 9:58 pm

Oh dear, a book of selfies? How can such a thing be a book, taints the word ‘book’. Great post about the subject though, I hope by the time that Boo is old enough to know what is going on this madness has run it’s course…

  17. 24th January 2015 / 7:33 am

Yes! Completely agree and some great points made!
But today I heard that unfortunately page three has made its return!!!!

  18. 24th January 2015 / 3:41 pm

What the what?!! A selfie book. I don’t like the Kardashians anyway but this just makes them worse. But then, I don’t who is the bigger fool – her for doing it or the people who buy the thing!! Great post. Thank you for linking to #PoCoLo

  19. 24th January 2015 / 10:08 pm

I really don’t get the whole fascination with the K’s let alone a book full of selfie’s from Kim. I have no idea why this would even sell but someone thinks it will. And it looks like Page 3 has made a return, what on earth is that about. CAn we please move our media into the 21st century! #brilliantblogposts

A selfie book is pure self-obsession and not great for our young children who will grow up in this world. As parents we have to give our children self-respect, self-confidence in all their abilities and compassion for others so they can laugh at these ridiculous ‘celebrities’ and not aspire to be like them.
