Macmillans World’s Biggest Coffee Morning

26th September 2014

Macmillan are without a shadow of a doubt a charity that truly are amazing. Today it’s their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning to raise money for this amazing charity who offer strength, hope, support and care to those affected by cancer; whether it be the patient themselves or friends and family who also are going through the pain, anguish and anxiety cancer brings. With research showing that 1 in 3 of us will be affected by cancer in our lifetime, it’s incredibly likely that everyone at some point in your life; whether it be you, a friend, acquaintance, colleague or a loved one – cancer is a reality.
Sadly, it’s become a massive reality in my life. I lost my amazing Mom to cancer at the end of April, just 9 months after being diagnosed. Her Macmillan nurse was such a lifeline. Not only did she help her with the facts, but she helped her financially, emotionally and offered us all a shoulder to cry on and picked us up when we were at our lowest. It never felt like she was doing a job – it was like she was a friend. She came to see us after Mom passed away and it was incredibly touching to hear her talk so fondly of her. She even remembered stories Mom had told her about my sister and I when we were little. That is more than just a job.
Macmillan helped me talked to my 5 year old. Try to prepare him in some way that his Granny was poorly and afterwards having to deal with the reality that she was no longer here. I feel forever in debt to Macmillan who made the last months of my Moms life that little bit less stressful. To her nurse, who answered all our questions. Sat with us, laughed with us, cried with us. In your darkest days, these are the people who helped us get through it.
So if you do anything today and this weekend – pop into one of these coffee mornings for a cuppa and a slice of cake. And pop a few quid in the box. 14 months ago I never would have thought in a million years that I’d be asking people to support this charity but cancer can strike anyone, at anytime. If you were faced with the horrible reality that you had cancer – would you want to face it alone? Have no one to turn to? If someone close to you was going through chemotherapy and you had questions – who would you ask them to? You can search for your local coffee morning they are running today and some throughout the weekend. I will definitely be attending over the weekend and my sister and I have talked about helping arrange one next year.
Thank you Macmillan. I will never forget what you have done for my family. I just hope that I never have to deal with you again – in the nicest possible way of course!!
