It was this time last year, that I had finally plucked up the courage to join Slimming World. I was on the cusp of going up yet another dress size taking it to my fourth in total and I realised I couldn’t go on like this anymore. I went on to lose three stone in under six months sticking to the Slimming World plan and haven’t looked back since. I am not professing to be an expert in ANY capacity no no no, however, I am sharing with you today MY 5 fool proof ways to lose weight with Slimming World. These for me are the key ingredients to my success
If you have crap in the cupboards, you’ll eat crap in the cupboards. I have found myself NEEDING to be prepared and totally on the ball with SW. I always like to have fail safe items in the fridge as backup. With three kids, you can inadvertently end up being late home and need something quick and easy. For times like this, I always have pasta, rice, spaghetti, mug shots, bacon medallions and eggs in the fridge AT ALL TIMES. You will always be able to bung something together pretty quick with these.
Go to a group
I flirted with doing Slimming World online and after a few weeks, gave up. I had no motivation, no support and no one that I felt I had to answer to. I know going to a group doesn’t work for everyone due to other commitments, locations etc but if you are thinking of joining and can get to a group – DO IT! I have built up a lovely relationship with my group and really think it’s helped me stay so focused. I joined with my mother in law and definitely found joining with someone you know helps. It gives you someone else who you can share your experiences with, ask questions and generally joining anything with a familiar face makes it easier. I wrote a post about what it’s like to join a Slimming World group if you’re wondering what it’s like.
This one takes some getting used to. With most diets of old, it was drummed into you: portion control, stay away from carbs, pasta and potatoes are THE DEVIL. Slimming World is the complete opposite. I eat bowls and bowls of pasta a day; I eat pasta as a snack, for my lunch and quite often with my tea. And I have ruddy LOADS. In fact, the more I seem to eat the better I seem to lose. It really does feel like you’re going against the grain but when you’re feeling full, you are more likely to stick with it. Who wants to deprive themselves and be starving 24/7? It really is the best way to eat and lose weight ever!
I know it’s not for everyone, but personally, if I am doing a but of exercise alongside SW, this really speeds up my weight loss. I know I am 31 and in pretty good shape health wise, so last January I started the couch to 5k app, which says it can have you running five kilometres in 10 weeks. To my amazement, it worked and I managed to easily run 5k regularly. I have to admit, I don’t run as much as I did back last year but I’ve now joined the gym and try to go at least twice a week. I haven’t been for months so Tuesday was my first time for months and I only managed 30 minutes on the treadmill and cross trainer but every little helps. I used to walk Charlie to school once a week too, which was a good way to improve fitness – a simple 10 minute walk instead of jumping in the car. That said – I won’t be doing it until the weather improves!!
Have a binge!
Controversially, this one isn’t for everyone. If you’ve just joined I probably wouldn’t say this is the best idea but every now and then I decide I need a good week off to indulge. If I didn’t do this, I reckon I would end up resenting SW. Over Christmas, I didn’t weigh in for three weeks and put on a whopping 9lbs! But I enjoyed every bloody minute, however by the end I was craving to go back to group and normality resume. I managed to lose 6lbs of that 9lbs this week so I am feeling good. Make sure you have a pre-weigh in ritual too (cough a big poo)
A year ago, I was so unhappy in myself. I was so heavy, unfit and unhappy. I had zero confidence and hated everything about myself. When people would harp on about weight loss and exercise changing their life I used to want to punch them in the face. 12 months on – I’m one of those people you want to punch (I do try not to harp on about it!) I still have body hang ups and am still 6lbs to target but I know I’ll get there. I feel so much happier and in better health for my kids. SW is not all sweetness and light. There are times when I’ve gained or maintained for no apparent reason and wanted to chuck in the towel, but I have now adopted it as a way of life. It’s so easy to follow and incorporate into everyday life. For me, it was the best thing I’ve ever done.
